Vampire Cop Ricky starts off in good humour as we’re given the setting of Transylvania, and a coffin opening up. Lo and behold a vampire arises, though what you don’t expect is for the said vampire to then be bitten by a mosquito and not get his own back. The mosquito then turns into a blood sucker of its own and travels all the way from Transylvania to South Korea only to end up sucking Ricky’s neck who ends up killing the mosquito, as you do.
Ricky, unfortunately, ends up as a bloodsucker himself though here comes the comedy bit. Everytime Ricky has an erection who gets horny, he turns into a vampire. It’s funny at first, but the silliness of it gets a but too much in the first 40 minutes. Intertwined with Ricky’s change into a vampire, is his involvement prior to changing, with a known criminal and his part as a dirty cop. Further more, having announced he was a vampire to a priest, who in turn called a specialist priest, he is now being hunted. If bad luck was liquid, Ricky would be drenched in the stuff.
There’s some broken logic in the film. At first Ricky is sensitive to the daylight, and this is shown. Then we find he can work for his precinct in the daytime and drive around as well, without getting any burns or being affected by sunlight. I know it’s a silly film, but I like my silliness to at least have some consistency. Does that even make sense? Perhaps I’m being silly.
Things make more sense after Ricky is killed by the man he player dirty cops with, only to be surprisingly resurrected by the same priest that had been hunting him. It’s with the help of the priest that he learns he can not only reverse his condition, but that he can use his powers for good, in particular having been responsible for the injuries to his fellow cop by proxy. It’s only then that sensitivity to light and his true blood lust start to make an appearance. There’s also the now bloody obligatory melodramtic scenes in Korean films. I am frankly getting sick of this as it seems a contractual obligation to have this in every Korean film. Rotten.
So Ricky tries to make amends for his failings, and his dirty cop business, once and for all, while he still can until he can revert back to his human self. What we then get are moments of more melodrama mixed with action scenes that aren’t very good. Sure they have their moments of humour, but in general the fights are a bit weak and for a demonstration of a vampire’s super powers, not a particularly good example.
Aside from the average action scenes, the comedy in the film is barely existent, with only a few memorable scenes of comedy and even those are forgettable rather quickly in any case. The romance side of things doesn’t fare too well either, being rather over cooked and underwhelming experiences. Sure it’s a little bit more risque with mouth to mouth kissing and scenes of a sexual nature (though it’s more sexually suggestive than sexual), but it’s still a little limp, for want of a better word.
Overall, Vampire Cop, Ricky has some nice ideas but they are fully realised nor are they well executed. It tries to marry action, comedy, and romance but fails to really endear the viewer of any of those groups to it. It’s not quite Blade, not quite Batman or any other super hero film, nor is it The Naked Gun, in fact I can’t be certain it is anything but a series of ideas strung together in the hope that it would pan out as a storyline of it’s own accord. An average effort.
Verdict: Mediocre comic, crime horror that fails to leave a memorable taste.
