piratebabysPaul Robertson must have been taking a lot of acid when making this production. Pirate Babys Cabana Battle Street Fight 2006 is perhaps one of the sickest and most sadistic productions I’ve seen from a short independent film maker, and one that perhaps satirises games in a way no other production has.

What’s striking about the production is the beautiful animation, the superb music, and all of it matching the quality of a Metal Slug game, mixing in elements from different scrolling fighter genres.

The outrageousness and audacity of the film maker is demonstrated with a world of violence that seems never ending. Even zombie babies have their heads decapitated in the process, while pregnant zombie mothers give birth to the dead zombie babies. No one is exempt from the death and destruction, and all of it could be construed as tasteless and mindless.

It’s a riveting piece which has high production values and has gamers itching for more. If you’re not a gamer, it will probably seem hum drum, and boring. There may be a lack of appreciation from those who aren’t familiar with all the references in the production, or with the type animation the production emulates with finesse, but it’s certainly a memorable piece with outstanding sound quality.

Verdict: Beautiful as it is violent, a masterpiece of 2d gaming animation.
